The Registrars Constituency Meeting discussed several issues related to registrar operations in relation to ICANN policies and issues. The subject of WHOIS remains a challenging issue, as there are no definitive policies yet on how to counter fraudulent information from spammers and cybersquatters. At the same time, the studies on WHOIS have gone for too long and some of the working group members are finding it difficult to move on without adequate funding to make the studies more comprehensive. The registrars agree, however, that WHOIS policies should be improved to protect the legitimate domain name registrants.
The constituency also discussed the matters of GNSO (Generic Names Supporting Organization) Reform, Expired Names, Abuse Policy, Fast Flux, and Transfers. These issues are still being discussed, and working groups are busy finalizing draft proposals that would help improve registrar services to its registrants in the near future.
In the afternoon session, ICANN Chairman Peter Dengate Thrush and ICANN President and CEO Paul Twomey sat down with the registrars to attend to their issues and concerns. The two leaders were asked about the status of ICANN now that it's memorandum of understanding with the US Department of Commerce is about to expire. Both Thrush and Twomey agree on due diligence as the appropriate approach for ICANN, noting that ICANN will always be accountable and transparent to the community.
